How well do your suppliers screen their staff?

An audit of over 50 third party suppliers has revealed worrying gaps in both knowledge and systems when it come to effective pre-employment screening processes. Organisations often rely on outsourced suppliers to provide key services and support – our initial findings indicate that we should not take the pre-employment screening that they carry out on their staff at face value! With major and growing concerns over illegal workers, fraudsters, easy to obtain fake documents and qualifications and increasing numbers of people desperately seeking employment it is more vital than ever that we seek reassurances from our suppliers that their staff do not pose a threat to our organisations.

The review of current pre-employment security processes in place with preferred suppliers of staff to a large organisation revealed a clear lack of both knowledge and processes relating to employee screening requirements. Knowledge of the HMG Baseline Personnel Security Standard and BS 7858 Security screening of individuals employed in a security environment Code of Practice was sparse and the use of the Centre for the Projection of National Infrastructure (CPNI) guidelines minimal. Only 14% where aware of and complied with the requirements of HMG Baseline Personnel Security Standard and although the majority conducted some form of document confirmation process, less than 25% knew of the CPNI guidelines!

Watch this space for an in depth analysis of our findings and how we can help you to protect yourself from failing to adopt appropriate security measures within your business and ensuring that you consider the scope to include third party suppliers and others who may have access to your facilities and information.
