Security Training for Research Facilities
Our security awareness training courses have evolved onto various packages that are individually packed for each client to ensure that the information is up-to-date and relevant. It is worth pointing out that Agenda also provides voluntary “free” talks in the UK to schools and colleges on the subject of the use of animals in research and that we have done radio and newspaper interviews on behalf of the Institute of Animal Technology (IAT) and the Coalition for Medical Progress also free of any charge.
The training that we do charge for is presented by people who have worked in the research or security industry for many years, some of whom have been personally targeted and worked for organisations that have been targeted. They are also trained facilitators and so the courses are based on providing a positive learning experience, group exercises and an enjoyable (memorable) training course. We have already run over 100 courses, training over 3,500 individuals in the UK, Europe and the USA & Canada with excellent feedback and we can see that the tighter legislation is driving some groups to either more extreme (terrorist) activities or infiltration (PETA).
The courses we offer are as follows

1. Half Day Security Awareness Courses – 20-30 people per course, in our brochure
This course provides exercises and lot's of anecdotal examples of tactics used in the past by AR groups in relation to the environment (why there is an issue), Security systems (how systems can help respond to the environment), Issues relating to risks to facilities and communications (current and past AR tactics) and People issues (infiltrator tactics and the development of practical awareness measures that individuals can take).
£50 ($100) per person (minimum 20 attendees) plus travel and accommodation.
2. Half Day Infiltrator Awareness Course – 20-30 people per course
This course concentrates on preventing infiltration from advertising the vacancy, reviewing applications and CVs, interviewing and finally through spotting an infiltrator. We have profiled 13 of the most prominent infiltrations and use “actual” infiltration materials as exercises to reinforce the messages. We use the 3 stage process to walk attendees through the issues of recruitment, background screening and awareness once employed. The course materials include a complete set of key learning points.
£50 ($100) per person (minimum 20 attendees) plus travel and accommodation
3. One Day HR Security in Recruitment Course – 6 people per course (developed with the Medical Research Council in the UK ), in our brochure
This is a more intense course building upon option 2 above and incorporating key learning skills in areas such as questioning techniques, body language and Neuro Linguistic Programming. It has several videoed role playing opportunities to enable participants to use the skills in a “real life” situation.
£3000 ($6000) plus travel and accommodation
4. Infiltrator Awareness taster sessions – up to 40 people (one hour per course)
These one hour courses focus on a brief introduction to the AR issues and then what infiltrators actually do (from our profiling) and what attendees can do to spot the issues and report them. This is useful for anybody working in any sensitive areas/front line workers etc. (not necessarily just animal areas, e.g. archives or I.T.?). We often run 4 courses per day to enable organisations to put a lot of employees through the training quickly.
£3000 ($6000) for 4 courses in one day, plus travel and accommodation (
160 people = £18.75 or $37.50 per person)
5. Handling Difficult Phone Calls – 6-12 People (Approximately 3 hours)
This half day interactive course, outlines how AR groups use the telephone system to gain information, terrorise people and issue bomb threats etc. We profile the kinds of calls to expect, how to deal with them effectively and how to use simple templates for recording the information. We also use role playing to enable participants to practice their newly developed skills.
£160 ($320) per head (minimum 6 people) plus travel and accommodation
6. Personal Security Course – 10 People (half or one day courses available)
The animal rights groups have been highly successful at targeting research organisations but in recent years they have moved their attention to suppliers and individuals. They have seen that many research organisations now have reasonably good security and they see individuals in particular as being the weak link. We have seen this tactic being used successfully on senior people at supplier companies, academics to get them to oppose new animal facilities and even members of the board at the New York Stock Exchange.
We have an introductory personal safety course which last for approximately half a day and a more detailed one day course. These courses are particularly useful for people that may be targeted due to their position within an organisation, e.g. animal facility managers but are equally useful to all senior managers and directors within institutions that are or may be under threat from animal rights aggression.
Both courses follow the same design but the longer course has more detail and scenarios.
- Introduction to the animal rights environment and the common tactics used against organisations.
- Social engineering – how do animal rights groups get your information?
- Targeting tactics – what do these groups do to target individuals and how does it progress from letters through to the fear of property damage and concern over personal safety.
- How can you minimise your exposure to these tactics – We explain how many of the common tactics can be prevented in the first place or the impact minimised by talking a series of steps, from protecting your i den tity (a big issue these days) through to driving tips if you are being followed.
Both courses will offer individuals a series of key skills and actions that can be taken to reduce the affects of personal targeting. We will also provide a comprehensive course handbook that provides hints and tips about making yourself a more difficult target and avoiding some of the common pitfalls.
£150 ($300) per person for the half day and £280 ($560) per person for the full day intensive course. Due to the nature of the courses and interaction required we suggest that no more than 10 individuals attend each course.
